“Our battered suitcases were piled on the sidewalk again; we had longer ways to go. But no matter, the road is life.” - Jack Kerouac

Yes, it's been a long time. Photos and thoughts will come this weekend when Jay is away on a Men's retreat.

    Wedding Shower

A few photos from the shower at my sister's house in September:
The food was amazing and I was very happy to see some former book club friends from Douglasville and some of my mom's friends!

After a game of "How well do you know Karri?" we got down to opening presents. I get anxious when I open presents in front of people, but I think my game face covered my jitters pretty well! Lauren (a roommate from college) made some wonderful Key Lime Pie cakes and homemade strawberry marshmallows. We all indulged! Most of The Little White House Girls were there too!

I was so excited to get these colanders from Lindsey. They are beautiful and Jay and I use them all the time! Unfortunately, Lindsey will not be at the wedding because she decided to go to Africa instead. I understood...

Sarah got me a gorgeous teal vase with two tiny birds on the rem. My chopsticks currently reside in this vase!

Our plates, bowls, etc. are all Fiestaware. My mom got me some cute blue salt and pepper shakers! I was so glad to see everyone. I felt so blessed that do to get to be around everyone and get presents to start a combined life together.

    No More Fairy Tales

I'm finding it very strange that I'll soon be married. I believed in too many fairy tales and Disney movies. The reality is that relationships are hard and I now understand Paul's view of marriage. Would still get married knowing what I know now? That I cannot answer because I'm not willing, but I will ask it.

Looking back I can see all the times I could have put a stop to things and I didn't for some reason. Was our marriage fated? Did I have any choice in the matter? The last question I know is not one to ask because it is obvious. Of course I had a choice. I believe in choice and free will, not predestination and fate. Would I be like Antigone and bury my brother knowing the consequence of death? Yes I would. Fate would not have chosen, I would have.

I made my choice and I will follow it and I believe I will struggle for a long time. I will struggle with being "tied down" and with being with someone for forever. I will struggle with the dreams I have, dreams that, honestly, might not come true. Dreams that were always tainted with the desire for marriage. Now that marriage is on the horizon, will the taint be the one thing I did not have before? I do not know. But time does. I know you will tell Time. You never lie.

I'm taking one day at a time. I'm joyful and sadden. I believe both are okay. I believe both emotions are real, honest and okay.

My words of advise: Don't believe the fairy tales.

    3 weeks to go!!

So the dress is here! I'm so excited! It came on Saturday right when I got home from school. The best thing about it is that I don't have to get it altered. A huge stress is taken away. I was frantically trying to find a place to alter the dress if need be so late in the game. Again, I worried about something I didn't need to worry about.... when will I learn?

Here's a photo of the dress. I hate the photos of the dress on the website, but she has some really great photos on facebook. Here's one that I'll post:

My dress does not have the blue petticoat but it's the same style and color.

Jay's wedding band came in Friday and mine is ordered.

Mindy found teal colored shoes to match Megan and me.

We have the permit for the site (unfortunately the location we thought we got the permit for is across the street and is much prettier, but has no electricity, so we're sticking to the site we have the permit for and we'll be able to have music).

Ashley and I began making tissue paper flowers for some wedding decorations from a Martha Stewart magazine Grace let me borrow.

All origami cranes are completed thanks to another lame day in my "Classroom Tools" class from Trevecca.

Thank you notes for gifts already received have been written and mailed.

"New" bedroom furniture, found on craigslist, was picked up today by Jay and Reuben and when it's all put together I'll post photos!

The gifts have been overwhelming. I wish I knew then what I know now about gifts and I would have spent more money on friends' gifts in the past. I'm so blown away by how people want to bless us with gifts to start us off. Almost everyday a new present is on the porch step waiting to be opened. What more will we need to buy after the wedding? Nothing. It's so humbling.

We've decided it's not financially possible for us to buy a house this spring, as much as we wanted to, we just simple can't. I think we're okay with this for now. We'll live in a tiny apartment and save for the future. It's exciting and a little scary to know that I'll really have to budget now....

Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America
    By Barbara Ehrenreich

Nickle & Dimed Don't Waste Your Time!

I'm quite disappointed in my $1 Goodwill book find from last weekend. Often I run across books I've coveted in Borders; although my trips to this over-priced book store are few and far between now that I'm engulfed in the world of McKay's and great used book stores that cover the city, and have found them later at Goodwill for a steal. It's a simple waiting game.

I found Nickel and Dimed and remembered wanting to read the account of an undercover investigative reporter living off minimum wage in America's heartland. Interesting idea and it was only a dollar.

So far the woman has simply gone to 3 different cities and worked a minimal (often two) jobs and "survived" for a month. I hardly call this "surviving" when she has the luxury of a car and "emergency" money which is used at her first city. These perks are not reality and she's simply exposing work conditions (not seen through the eyes of a migrant worker) that any T.V. show would expose. At one point she considers not returning to Wal-Mart, after being interviewed, because of some "illegal substances" she might have smoked earlier in the month might show up on the mandatory drug test. Really? I mean, this book was published and considered "investigative?" I'm horrified. She's a smart, wordy, woman who uses her vocabulary as a weapon throughout the book to make sure the reader knows she's smart and wordy and all credit she acquired the first half of the book (which isn't much) is discredited with her little experimentation with illegal drugs.

This book should not have been published and the writer needs to find a new occupation.

Don't bother picking this one up. Go talk to some migrant workers for a good feel for what it's like to survive on minimum wage in America. I guarantee you won't be bogged down with superfluous words.
